Chinese Market Size (CENSUS 1996)
Based on the 1996 Census, over 920,000 Canadians reported that they are
Chinese by their ethnic origin. Eighty percent of Chinese Canadians live in
Ontario and B.C. In fact, 70% of the total Chinese population live in Toronto
and Vancouver CMA. (These findings reflect total responses - single & multiple
responses added together.)
Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton also have a significantly large Chinese
population. Based on absolute numbers, Toronto is the number one city with the
most Chinese - 359,450; which represents 8.4% of the total Toronto population.
Vancouver, has the second largest number of Chinese, 288,800 -- is actually
15.8% of Vancouver's total population. Table 1 is a listing of population data in
5 major cities.
